From foam block to finished mattress
A look behind the scenes of Bawitex production
Buying a mattress is one thing – knowing how it is made is quite another. Visitors to our sleep centres in Goldau, Schattdorf, Adliswil or Steinhausen see the finished product: covered, soft and ready to sleep on. But before a mattress arrives in our showroom or in your home, it undergoes a careful journey. This begins with the foam block from the Zurich Oberland and ends with a finished quality product from our factory in Goldau. Swiss Made – locally manufactured.
Step 1: Our basis – Swiss foam, carefully selected, cleverly combined
The core of a mattress determines its comfort. For our mattresses, we use high-quality foams, most of which we source specifically from Carpenter – our long-standing foam supplier. Carpenter, based in the Zurich Oberland, is one of Europe's leading manufacturers and supplies a wide range of foam qualities with different properties.
At Bawitex, we develop the structure of each mattress from scratch ourselves, together with our foam supplier – from the selection to the arrangement of the individual layers. We pay attention to optimal ergonomics, targeted pressure relief, a comfortable sleeping climate and durability. The result is a mattress core that supports or yields exactly where your body needs it – a lying sensation that adapts perfectly to you.
Which foams are suitable for mattresses?
We rely on modern comfort foams such as EvoPoreHRC, EvoPoreVHRC or visco foam, which are particularly breathable, dimensionally stable and point-elastic. These materials ensure a healthy sleeping climate and offer the ideal mix of support and relief.

Step 2: Material knowledge that comes in handy during consultations
Anyone who develops mattresses must understand the materials. That is why we actively promote the specialist knowledge of our employees. New team members visit the production facilities of our supplier Carpenter to learn about the properties of different foams first-hand – how density, resilience and breathability feel.
This knowledge is not only incorporated into the manufacturing process, but also into our advice at the sleep centre: well-founded, honest and first-hand. This enables us to explain exactly which mattress is suitable for whom – whether for side, back or stomach sleepers, people with back problems or allergy sufferers. Healthy sleep starts with the right material. And we understand this in detail.
Advantages of foam mattresses? They are lightweight, hygienic, durable and particularly point-elastic – meaning they adapt precisely to the body without rebounding. This promotes healthy sleep and reduces pressure points.

Step 3: Real craftsmanship begins in Goldau
As soon as the foam materials arrive at our premises, the actual manufacturing process begins in Goldau – using traditional Swiss craftsmanship.
Each mattress is made individually – no conveyor belt, no mass production. Depending on the model, we combine several layers to create a precisely coordinated core: for example, a stable support core, specific zones for the pelvis and shoulders, or a pressure-relieving comfort layer. The result is an ergonomically designed structure – for perfect sleeping comfort.
Our employees cut the foam to the nearest millimetre, align it carefully and glue each layer by hand. It doesn't matter whether it's a standard size or a custom size – every mattress is unique. Before leaving our workshop, each piece undergoes thorough quality control: we check all transitions, bonds and the cover – until every detail is just right.

Step 4: Custom-made products? Business as usual for us
Thanks to our own production facility in Goldau (canton of Schwyz) in Switzerland, we are extremely flexible. Whether round, slanted, extra-long, for campers, boats or therapy couches – custom-made products are part of everyday life at Bawitex.
What is considered an exception elsewhere is routine for us. This is possible because we do not engage in industrial series production and manufacture each mattress individually – with a high degree of adaptability and a wealth of experience.

Step 5: Open doors for genuine insights
Many customers are amazed when they learn how much manual work goes into our mattresses. Even better: let them experience it for themselves. That's why we invite them to an open day in Goldau once a year. During guided tours, we show how a mattress is made from start to finish – from cutting the foam to the finished cover.
The open day offers plenty of great conversations with our team, delicious bratwurst sausages, aperitifs and exciting insights into genuine Swiss craftsmanship.
Step 6: Our promise – Swiss sleeping comfort with provenance
A Bawitex mattress stands for more than just a good night's sleep. It stands for a well-designed product, genuine craftsmanship, regional responsibility and over 40 years of experience in sleep consulting.
We design, manufacture and test everything directly in Switzerland – from the initial idea to shipping. In partnership with Carpenter as our foam supplier and with a strong team in Goldau.
Curious?
Visit us at one of our sleep centres or experience our factory live at the next open day. We would be happy to show you how sleep comfort with provenance is created – perhaps soon for your very own personalised mattress. 😊
